Horizon-Futures

Why don’t we use a traditional futures cone? The main reason is that it is perhaps too restrictive and does not allow for rich metaphors to enable us to visualise a future more concretely, rather than focus on what otherwise is very abstract.

In addition we often don’t really know what future it is that we actually think that is ‘desirable’ until probably just before we get there. What seems like a good ideat the time (the world wide web) can have unintended negative consequences (too much algorithmic social media) and what seems like a poor idea at the time (voting rights for women in modern democracies) turns out to be a blessing and a very good idea once it arrived.

So our emphasis is to not place ALL our effort into heading towards a ‘desirble’ future – some – just not all. We can devote as much effort into avoiding negative futures that seem (at the moment) to be patently obviously a bad idea – such as a nuclear world war.
